The plane is waiting on the tarmac by the time we arrive.
âDo you have a paper bag?â
Halleâs been quiet the whole ride here. Normally, her silence is ideal, but since she probably suffers from PTSD, I worry sheâs retreating into herself. Though, asking for something is a good sign.
âNo, I donât have a paper bag. Do you feel like youâre going to hyperventilate or barf?â Unlocking the doors, I reach for our bags in the back, keeping my eyes on her just in case sheâs getting sick.
âBarf?â She arches a brow at me. âThatâs an unusual word for you, isnât it?â
I fight off the urge to grin. âI think you, of all people, Ms. Belle, should know I can use slang without issue.â
Her cheeks tint with pink, and I know sheâs remembering the night she was pantyless, spread out beneath me as I lied and claimed I could remain professional at the sight of her pussy. It was one of the hardest things Iâve ever had to do. It wasnât just the sight of her pussy on my floor, but the smell of her arousal as she fought through the pain as I stretched her. It was sensory overload.
Being with her on this plane, forty thousand feet in the air⦠isnât much better.
âAre you sure you didnât bring any sedatives?â Her fear has returned.
Closing the door, I walk around to her side and squat down so Iâm at eye level. âYou donât need a sedative.â
I donât tell her I have one just in case. You donât specialize in scar revisions and not encounter patients who have traumatic pasts. I didnât realize Halle would have a sensitivity to planes; her file didnât mention it, but regardless, Iâm prepared to get her to Astor safely, both mentally and physically.
âI donât want you to see me like this or worse,â she finally says, her gaze tracking to the ground.
My chest tightens as I put a finger under her chin and lift her eyes back to mine. âSee you like what?â
Her lips quiver. âBroken.â
âYouâre not broken.â Leaning in, I smooth the lines of her mouth with my thumb. âNever broken, Peach.â
A tear streaks down her face as her hand clings to mine. âYou donât know me. I wasnât,â she sniffles, âI wasnât always like this.â
âLike what?â
Releasing me, she extends her hand between us. I donât think either one of us breathes when she places her hand over my heart and whispers, âBrave. I wasnât always brave⦠until I saw you.â
I swear my heart spasms, sending my rhythm into atrial fibrillation.
âWhen I was lying there in that hospital bed and couldnât moveâcouldnât breathe without pain. All I could think was I wanted to die. My friends were his. My apartment⦠Starting over. Learning to walk seemed impossible.â
She blinks and more tears fall. âAnd then one night, after a very painful therapy session, I saw you. You were giving an interview on TV with that woman whose husband set her on fire.â
I nod, remembering the woman well.
